Cheap US flights in January?

loz asked:

I am looking at flying from NYC to other US cities in January. Is there a good budget airline website I can check out?

On another note, what are people’s thoughts on getting a hop on, hop off bus ticket and travelling down the coast (and then flying back up)

Thanks!

Jamie

Honestly if you are not that picky about where you are going I would just go to Southwest.com their fares are very reasonable and they don’t have all sort of crazy rules like those discount sites do. It may not be the absolute lowest fare you can get but they by not charging all sorts of fees.

I actually took a cross-country trip using the Greyhound Ameripass program several years ago. It’s something I am really glad I did but, would not want to do again. It’s a very affordable way to see the country. I even managed to work it out so that I slept on the bus every other night to get the most out of it. It’s been a while but, you should still be able to print the schedules off the website. To get the most out of it you need to do allot of planning.

Some words of warning on the dirty dog: you will meet allot of weird people who won’t leave you alone, you will have long layover in unsavory places in the middle of the night, be prepared to be very uncomfortable for long periods of time, it may be difficult to get around once you get to a city, bus stations can be in bad areas, you will eat some nasty truck stop food. I’d highly recommend you bring some audio books, a copy of Lets Go USA, one of those neck pillows, lots of snacks and maybe some mace.

If you are the adventurous give it go you will have lots of stories to tell!
