Is it possible to buy cheap flights a day or two before departure? Directly with the airline or at the airport or with a ‘last minute’ type agency? I’m looking at flying out of NYC to somewhere else in January. I’ve checked out some flight websites, but I don’t want to commit to something before I arrive in NYC!

It is possible, but you run the risk of the fair increasing or tickets for a specific flight being sold out.

It all depends, and it’s hard to guess what will happen. Sometimes they will sell them cheap at the last minute, if there are open seats. If it’s pretty full, then forget about it. It might be cheaper in the long run to purchase a ticket, that doesnt have extremely high rates to change the dates if need be. Last minute tickets can run thousands of dollard. Take a look at what the rates are running right now to travel in the next few days…this will give you an idea of what price you may be able to expect for a last minute ticket in January.
