There aren’t any nonstop flights between Tallahassee and Italy, or anywhere in Europe for that matter.
The cheapest published fare currently with available seats for departure15 June and return 6 days later is $1494 round trip, with all taxes and fees included. This arrives Milan and returns from Rome–because that’s cheapest, which you asked.
Independent hotels 2-3 miles from the center of Milan are showing availability at $51 per night for nights of 16-20 June (you arrive 16th and return 21st, so you’ve only got 5 hotel nights). So that’s $255 + $1494 air = $1749 — to answer your questions directly.
Winter is the cheapest time for transatlantic airfares (except around Christmas or Easter). Go early March, and airfare is only $581rt with USAir.
You could also save some on lodging if you go in a youth hostel instead of hotel. Expect that to be about $25 per night per person (but if travelling 2 or more together, a hotel at $51 per night might be better).

according to orbitz the cheapest that I see is $1617 for the flight alone You can also get a flight from TLH to CDG (Paris) for about $1300 and then once you and in Europe, flights are pretty cheap (Alitalia less the $200)
If you drive to Atlanta you can get to Europe a LOT cheaper than from TLH

The site lists great cheap travel sites. One site compares the fares from all the airlines. Once you get the lowest fare, you may be able to haggle with Priceline or Hotwire for a lower fare.
