Cheapest flights are typically those that have more transits. You can try Thai Airways & Malaysia Airlines. They will transit in Bangkok & Kuala Lumpur respectively and then again either in Seoul or Tokyo. They cost about S$900+taxes return.
The next cheapest option is to fly Northwest or United Airlines. That will cost about S$1400 + taxes. But I believe Northwest (www.nwa.com.sg) is having a promotion now. They transit in Tokyo or Hong Kong before the long Pacific Ocean flight.
The most expensive is Singapore Airlines. That will cost about S$1800, transiting in Seoul or Tokyo. They do, however, have that direct Singapore-LA flight on the new Airbus A340-500. It is about 10-20% more expensive that the usual SQ flights.
